TOURMALINE
The name Tourmaline is thought to have originated from the Sinhalese word “Thoramalli”,
which actually refers to the “Thora” plant. One can quickly tie two loose ends together,
the Thora plant having distinct yellow -brown flowers, which closely resemble the commonly
found yellow brown Tourmalines from Sri Lanka.
This day and age, Tourmaline has become a much more renowned and widely
appreciated gem. Paraiba Tourmaline, Rubellite, Lagoon Tourmaline,
and numerous other colours have become extremely popular over the last 30 years.
In fact, it is probably the most colourful Gemstone family of all, covering the
entire colour palette! It has great hardness, overall transparancy in rough crystals,
and is a versatile and durable Gem.
The Tourmalines we like to work with primarily come from the vast continent of Africa.
We live in exciting times where much of the production of popular colours have
only been unearthed in the last 20 to 30 years, and with old supplies dwindling,
there is always something new and amazing that pops up!
