SPINEL
Spinel, The Connoisseur’s Stone
If you had asked about Spinel’s in the 70’s and even 80’s it would have likely been
followed by a quizzical look and a raise of the eyebrows. It is steeped in history that stretches
thousands of years, but somehow always evaded the headlines until the last few decades.
Adorning crowns of Kings, and Mughal Emperor’s jewels, Spinels were often confused
for it’s more prominent cousins, Ruby & Sapphire. Indeed it is often found in the same areas
but it was only when Science came along that the distinction was made.
The classic Spinel octahedron shape, differs distinctly from the hexagonal barrel formed
Sapphire crystals, and nowadays the difference is seen easily by a trained eye, both in rough
form and also after cut and polished. Spinel often possesses a greater clarity, although it is not as
common to see flawless stones as with Tourmalines and other high quality gemstones,
but more common than Rubies and Sapphires which often have crystals and silk
(which can have their own appeal).
